Dessert is a staple in many people’s diets, but sometimes you may want something sweet that you don’t have to feel guilty for eating. This is that healthy dessert. Made of mixed frozen berries and skim milk, this frozen sorbet-like smoothie is refreshingly delicious – and one of my favorite desserts!
Berries are a super food. They pack the biggest antioxidant punch of the fruits. Here’s a little Tidbit on blueberries: Blueberries are in season May through October and grow on a bush that’s related to not only cranberries, but to azaleas, mountain laurel, and rhododendron. The little blue bulbs are crammed full of anthocyanins – a plant substance that provides the blue-red pigment to the fruit. The pigment of fruit is an active substance that not only acts as it’s ‘sunblock’ by protecting the plant from UV rays, but as an antioxidant also helps protect our own cells from free radical damage and our brain cells from oxidative stress — plus so much more.
One serving (1 cup raw) has: 84 calories, 4 grams fiber, 24% of the recommended Daily Value of vitamin C, 36% DV vitamin K, and 25% DV manganese. Refreshing Mix Berry Smoothie-Sorbet Prep time: 5 mins Total time: 5 mins Serves: 1 A cool, refreshing and antioxidant-packed smoothie-sorbet that's a perfect snack or dessert.
½ cup frozen raspberries
½ cup frozen blueberries
½ a frozen banana, in slices
¾ cup skim or low fat milk (or milk alternative)
½ scoop chocolate whey protein powder (optional!)
Add berries, milk, and protein powder (if you're using it) in a blender (or large Magic Bullet cup).
Blend until smooth. You may need to shake or stir the mixture up a bit a couple times between bouts of mixing to help break up the frozen fruit for a thicker sorbet-lilke smoothie.
If you prefer a thinner smoothie, feel free to add milk or milk alternative until you reach your desired consistency.
Enjoy the colorful and delicious dessert!
