Strawberry Nutella Swirl Quick Bread

by ADMIN on JULY 16, 2011

Are you drooling yet? I am. This bread isn’t necessarily the healthiest on my site, but it sure does make an amazingly moist and delicious snack and even more fantastic french toast! Feel free to substitute raspberries or other berries for the strawberries.

Nutrition TidBit

Unlike what the Nutella company wants you to think, chocolate hazelnut spread is not as good for you as peanut butter – just because it has hazelnuts doesn’t mean it’s ‘healthy’. One serving of Nutella (2 Tbsp) has 200 calories and only 3 grams of protein; whereas peanut butter has 8 grams of protein per serving (2 Tbsp). Moreover, Nutella has 21 grams of sugar! That’s about 5 teaspoons all packed into just 2 Tablespoons of the spread. Peanut butter without added sugar has only half a gram of sugar.

Not only that, but commercial for Nutella tout that it is made “simple quality ingredients such as hazelnuts, skim milk, and a hint of cocoa.” What they neglect to point out is that the first two ingredients are Sugar and Palm Oil; not so quality ingredients in my mind.

So what’s the bottom line? Enjoy Nutella occasionally as part of a delicious, sweet treat – but try not to make it part of your daily eating pattern since it’s not a good source of any nutrients needed for good health. Strawberry Nutella Swirl Quick Bread Prep time: 15 mins Cook time: 55 mins Total time: 1 hour 10 mins Serves: 8 to 10 A sweet quick bread swirled with strawberries and Nutella - a great treat!

Ingredients

  • ⅓ cup Nutella plust 2 Tbsp

  • 1 cup fresh strawberries, chopped

  • 1 cup flour

  • ½ cup wheat flour

  • 1 tsp baking powder

  • ¼ tsp baking soda

  • ⅛ tsp salt

  • ½ cup sugar

  • ½ tsp nutmeg

  • ½ tsp cinnamon

  • 6 oz fat free vanilla flavored yogurt (I like to use Greek)

  • 1 tsp vanilla

  • 1 egg plus 1 egg white

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350F and prepare a bread pan with spray canola oil.

  2. Combine the dry ingredients into a large bowl. In a separate bowl, mix together all the wet ingredients EXCEPT the strawberries and Nutella.

  3. Then add the wet to the dry ingredients and stir until just combined.

  4. Microwave ⅓ cup Nutella in a small microwave safe bowl for 20 second. Add strawberries and mix well.

  5. Pour half the batter into the bread pan, then spread the strawberry-Nutella evenly over the batter, and finally pour the rest of the batter on top.

  6. Lastly, heat up the remaining 2 Tbsp Nutella for about 10 second then drizzle on top of the batter.

  7. Bake for 55 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let bread cool completely before removing from pan as there are many 'lose' layers.

  8. Enjoy!
